GARDENING Gardening is the art, technique and practice of cultivating gardens. It consists of growing, both in an open and closed space (beds), flowers, trees, vegetables, or greens (orchards), whether for aesthetics, taste or for food, and in whose achievement the economic objective is secondary. The term "garden", known since the 12th century, seems to come from the Latin-Germanic compound hortus gardinus which literally means "garden surrounded by a fence", from the Latin hortus, French garden, or gart or gardo "closed", as if the garden had to defend itself against animals and even thieves. Gardening can be seen as aesthetic expressions of beauty through art and nature, a display of taste or style in civilized life, an expression of an individual's or culture's philosophy, and sometimes as a display of private status or national pride, in private, and public landscapes.
